Getting your teen their first car is a huge milestone - and it comes with a mix of excitement, nerves, and a whole lot of questions.

At CarLife Auto Repair, we’ve helped countless families in Scottsdale and Gilbert get their teens road-ready with confidence. Whether your teen is behind the wheel for the first time or heading off to college, here’s what every parent should know before handing over the keys.

✅ 1. Safety First: Choose the Right Vehicle

Not all cars are created equal, especially when it comes to teen drivers. Look for:

High safety ratings (check NHTSA or IIHS)

Good visibility and responsive brakes

Advanced driver assistance systems (lane assist, backup camera, etc.)

● Moderate horsepower – teens don’t need a race car!

Thinking about a used car? Bring it to CarLife for a pre-purchase inspection so you know exactly what you're getting into.

✅ 2. Get a Baseline Inspection

Before your teen starts driving regularly, schedule a full multi-point inspection. We’ll check:

● Brakes and tires

● Battery health

● Fluid levels

●  Lights, belts, and hoses

This gives you peace of mind and helps prevent breakdowns before they start.

✅ 3. Teach the Basics of Car Care

Most teens aren’t taught basic car care in school — but knowing a few simple things can go a long way:

● How to check oil and tire pressure

● What to do if a dashboard warning light comes on

● What to do if a dashboard warning light comes on

● When to get maintenance like oil changes or tire rotations

We’re always happy to walk your teen through the essentials right here at CarLife.

✅ 4. Set a Maintenance Schedule

Create a calendar reminder or use an app to track service intervals. Or better yet — let us take care of it with scheduled reminders and service tracking at CarLife. We’ll help make sure their car stays road-safe and reliable.

✅ 5. Build an Emergency Kit

Equip the car with essentials:

●  Jumper cables

● Tire repair kit or spare tire

● Flashlight and batteries

● Water and snacks

● Emergency contact card

It’s one of those things you hope they never need… but if they do, they’ll be ready.
